PREVENTATIVE HEALTH GUIDELINES FOR HEALTHY ADULTS -- 2006
The Guide to Clinical Preventative Services, Recommendations of the
U.S. Preventative Services Task Force for Disease Control and Prevention
(U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC)).
RECOMMENDED SCREENINGS FOR MALE AND FEMALE ADULTS -- 20 TO 39 YEARS OLD
- ROUTINE PHYSICAL EXAM: Complete initial in-depth examination by
physician -- INCLUDING a TB (Tuberculosis) skin test; Prostate
Examination for Men; Breast Examination for Women; updates of any
immunizations you need (make sure you have had your Meningitis,
Tetanus,
Hepatitis A and Hepattitis B immunizations and update any others as
necessary; and have a full CBC (regular blood test) PLUS testing of
Total Cholesterol and HDL Cholesterol; and checking your Blood Pressure
and Body Temperature. Future exams will be determined by your
physician.
- HEARING TEST: Once a year (if you have a Cochlear Implant, then a
remapping by your CI Audiologist once a year, PLUS a hearing test on
the nonimplanted ear).
- VISION TEST: Once a year.
- HIV/AIDS AND SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE (StD) TESTING: As
necessary, especially if sexually active.
- FOR WOMEN -- PAP SMEAR AND PELVIC EXAMINATION each year until there
are two normal ("negative") tests in a row, and then every 3 years
thereafter.
- FOR WOMEN -- CHLAMYDIA SCREENING -- regularly for women under age
25, and then as decided by the physician for women older than age 25.
- FOR WOMEN -- FOLIC ACID BLOOD TEST: For all women of childbearing
age.
- FOR WOMEN -- CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS: As recommended by the doctor.
- FOR PREGNANT WOMEN -- PREGNANCY VITAMINS AND REGULAR CHECKUPS
during and after pregnancy.
RECOMMENDED SCREENINGS FOR MALE AND FEMALE ADULTS -- 40 TO 64 YEARS OLD
- ROUTINE PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: Every year (see above). Total
Cholesterol and HDL Cholesterol Blood Tests: Men, every 5 years after
age 35, and Women, every 5 years after age 45.
- HEARING TEST: Once a year (if you have a Cochlear Implant, then a
remapping by your CI Audiologist once a year, PLUS a hearing test on
the
nonimplanted ear).
- VISION TEST: Once a year.
- HIV/AIDS AND SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE (StD) TESTING: As
necessary, especially if sexually active.
- COLON AND RECTAL CANCER SCREENING -- STARTING AT AGE 50: This may
include (1) Fecal occult blood test to see if there is blood in your
feces -- every year; (2) Flexible Sigmoidoscopy to test your lower part
of your colon for cancer -- every 5 years; and (3) Colonoscopy to test
a
larger part of your colon for cancer -- every 10 years.
- FOR WOMEN: MAMMOGRAM (X-Ray of the breasts) every 1 to 2 years.
- FOR WOMEN -- PAP SMEAR AND PELVIC EXAMINATION each year until there
are two normal ("negative") tests in a row, and then every 3 years
thereafter.
- FOR WOMEN -- CHLAMYDIA SCREENING -- as decided by the physician for
women older than age 25.
- FOR WOMEN -- FOLIC ACID BLOOD TEST: For all women of childbearing
age.
- FOR WOMEN -- CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS: As recommended by the doctor.
- FOR PREGNANT WOMEN -- PREGNANCY VITAMINS AND REGULAR CHECKUPS

- FOR WOMEN -- PRE-MENOPAUSE, PERI-MENOPAUSE, AND POST-MENOPAUSE
EXAMINATION AND TREATMENTS (INCLUDING HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY): To
be discussed with the physician.
RECOMMENDED SCREENINGS FOR MALE AND FEMALE ADULTS -- 65 YEARS OLD AND
OLDER
- ROUTINE PHYSICAL EXAMINATION: Every year (see above). Total
Cholesterol and HDL Cholesterol Blood Tests every 5 years for both men
and women.
- HEARING TEST: Once a year (if you have a Cochlear Implant, then a
remapping by your CI Audiologist once a year, PLUS a hearing test on
the
nonimplanted ear).
- VISION TEST: Once a year.
- HIV/AIDS AND SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE (StD) TESTING: As
necessary, especially if sexually active.

- FOR WOMEN -- CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS: As recommended by the doctor.
- FOR WOMEN -- POST-MENOPAUSE EXAMINATION AND TREATMENTS (INCLUDING
HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY): To be discussed with the physician.
